No injuries were reported and no evacuations were necessary following a gas leak near a local elementary school Tuesday.
Emporia Fire and Kansas Gas were called to 127 South Washington Street, near Riverside Elementary School, shortly before 11:50 am for a reported gas leak. According to Emporia Fire Batallion Chief Tony Fuller, the leak developed after the owner of the property struck the line while digging to replace a sewer line.
Kansas gas responded quickly, pinched the line and made the necessary repairs. Fuller says EFD was on scene for close to five minutes total.
With the wind blowing out of the south, gas fumes drifted to the north and avoided Riverside so no evacuations were needed.
