When the Kansas Severe Weather Awareness statewide tornado drill takes place March 7, Lyon County will not be involved.
Lyon County has not participated for years because sirens are tested countywide at noon Mondays and Lyon County Emergency Communications Director Roxanne Van Gundy says local authorities don’t “want to confuse an already smooth process.”
When it comes to the normal testing schedule, Van Gundy says county officials appreciate the willingness of residents to listen every week and report any issues that develop. Residents can call the Emergency Communications non-emergency number at 62-=343-4225 or email info@lcecc.org if any issues arise with the weekly siren test.
With Severe Weather Awareness Week all next week, the spotter training schedule areawide essentially begins this week — as in Wednesday:
*Wednesday: Cottonwood Falls Community Building, 6:30 pm
*Monday: Eureka High Auditorium, 6:30 pm
*March 7: Coffey County 4H Building, Burlington, 7 pm
*March 30: Carbondale ELM Community Building, 7 pm
*April 11: Wabaunsee High commons area, Alma, 7 pm
*April 12: Morris County Courthouse, Council Grove, 7 pm
Severe Weather Awareness Week will have several daily focal points:
*March 6: general readiness
*March 7: tornado safety
*March 8: lightning safety
*March 9: hail and wind safety
*March 10: flood safety
Whenever severe weather is a threat or underway for Lyon and surrounding counties, stay with KVOE, KVOE.com and KVOE social media for updates. Once again this year, our coverage will be augmented by our team of 30 Storm Team volunteer spotters areawide.
