Nearly a month after a shots fired incident in east-central Emporia, a suspect has been arrested and charged with attempted murder.
Rafael Castaneda Jr had his first appearance in Lyon County District on Wednesday and now has a preliminary hearing March 23 before Judge Jeff Larson. A review hearing is slated for 1:30 pm March 15.
Castaneda was arrested Feb. 28 and subsequently charged with single counts of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated burglary and aggravated assault, unlawful discharge of a firearm in the city limits and criminal discharge at an occupied dwelling as well as two counts of criminal damage. The attempted murder count has an alternate of attempted voluntary manslaughter.

Authorities had been investigating after several shots were reported in the area of South and Market early Feb. 6. Two vehicles were damaged but nobody was hurt.
