The Emporia High boys basketball team hung on for a 56-53 victory over Bishop Carroll in the Sub-state semi-finals Wednesday at Spartan Gymnasium.
Emporia High led 12-10 after the first quarter before Bishop Carroll went on a 9-0 run to lead by as many as seven. The Spartans then closed the half on a 12-2 run to lead 26-23 at halftime.
The game went back and forth in the third quarter with the Spartans leading 43-42 going to the fourth. Parker Leeds broke a 51-all tie with a 3-pointer with over a minute left to give Emporia High the lead for good.
Coach Lee Baldwin says the win was a total team effort.
Jalyn King led Emporia High with 20 points.
The Emporia High boys are now 15-5 on the season. They’ll travel to Andover for a 6 p.m. game Saturday. Andover defeated Goddard 63-30. The winner will advance to the Class 5A state tournament at White Auditorium.
