Weather permitting, construction begins this week on a significant project in Strong City.
The city’s Safe Routes to Schools project, in the planning stage since 2018 and approved for almost $800,000 in state funding in December, will affect several streets near Chase County Elementary School, including portions of Fifth Street, Fifth Avenue, Chase and Palmer either west or north of the school.
Nearly a mile of pedestrian and bike paths will be built as part of this project.
The overall program is a federal reimbursement effort offering funds for projects that help children walk or bicycle to nearby schools more safely. Funding is awarded to cities and school districts as part of a competitive process.
