Preliminary work is underway on a long-awaited project in Strong City.
The Safe Routes to Schools project has been moving forward since 2018 and was approved for a significant grant as announced by the Kansas Department of Transportation in December. Mayor Lydia Simmons says it’s an important project with a lot of partners at the local and state levels.
Several streets either are or will be affected near Chase County Elementary School, including portions of Fifth Street, Fifth Avenue, Chase and Palmer, as nearly a mile of pedestrian and bike paths are built or sidewalks are smoothed out. Strong City is getting nearly $800,000 in federal funding to make these improvements.
The current goal is to have all the work finished by the time school starts in mid-August.
