Based off information from the Kansas Flint Hills Smoke Management’s social media, the 2023 pasture burn season is off to a slow start.
Nearly 1,500 acres has been burned in Chase County north of Strong City, but no other activity was noted last month. Regardless, March and April are typically busy days for grass fire activity and Lyon County Emergency Management Director Jarrod Fell asks landowners to be responsible when they burn.
Conditions should be good for burning Tuesday, with wind speeds at or below 10 mph, but residents are already being encouraged not to burn Wednesday with highs in the mid-60s and wind gusts possibly as high as 50 mph areawide.
Residents can call their controlled burn information in to the Lyon County Emergency Communications non-emergency line at 620-343-4225, but authorities are urging residents to go online to lyoncounty911.org and fill out their burn permits that way to reduce the amount of phone traffic to emergency dispatchers.
