Major street construction projects are underway in two parts of Emporia — and will be for at least the next four months.
Geometric improvements have started at the Sixth and Prairie intersection, constricting eastbound and westbound traffic on West Sixth to one lane plus turn access. City Engineer Jim Ubert says traffic adjustments are also coming eventually on Prairie Street.
As part of the above-ground enhancements, one of the BP service station entrances will be closed. The turning radius for the southwest corner outside Tyson will be widened, with similar work for the northeast corner outside Mr. G’s Express. Utility, curb, gutter and sidewalk improvements are coming, and new traffic signals with radar technology will be added.
Meanwhile, Highland Street is closed to thru traffic at 12th and completely at 14th for street reconstruction. Sanitary sewer and water line improvements between 14th and 15th are leading off the city project, followed by storm sewer work and a phased approach to replace the pavement between 12th and 16th. Ubert says the city is also coordinating with Emporia State for 20 nose-in parking spots on the west side of Highland.
The goal is to have everything done by the time Emporia State students return for the fall semester in mid-August.
