Part of the early process in Emporia’s geometric improvement project at Sixth and Prairie includes temporary traffic signals.
Work began on the temporary signals Wednesday, and City Communications Manager Christine Torrens says the temporary signals will stay in place until permanent signals are fully operational near the end of this project, perhaps as soon as August.
City Engineer Jim Ubert says the permanent lights will be radar-based, giving better traffic control during poor visibility. These will be the first radar-based traffic lights in the city limits.
Eastbound and westbound traffic is already down to one lane on Sixth Avenue, with traffic constructions also coming to Prairie later. All four corners of the intersection will have improved turning access, with curb, gutter, sidewalk and underground utility enhancements also planned.
