Emporia is set to welcome a contingent of foreign exchange students from Denmark next month.
The students from Kolding, Denmark, will visit Emporia April 12th-17th as part of a learning opportunity to further their education. Jess Brinkman, Study Abroad and Cross Cultural programming Coordinator at ESU, describes how the program is meant to touch on both their studies as well as culture.
Students will be staying with host families for the duration of their visit. Brinkman says that the host family experience is a great opportunity for cultural exchange for students and families alike.
Those interested in hosting must be able to take at least 2 students, provide a room separate from the host family for them, provide breakfast and supper each day, and be able to provide transportation to and from campus each day. Each host family is awarded $75 per student to compensate for these expenses.
Other ways for Emporia to interact with international students include becoming a “friendship family,” where families can have dinners and outings with an international student. Or a “conversation partner,” where volunteers may be paired with an international student to meet for an hour to practice casual conversation.
