National Teachers Hall of Fame Interim Director Ken Weaver recently summed up the inductees into the 2023 hall of fame class with a single word “profound.”
The 31st hall of fame class includes Dr. Erick Heuck of Miami, Florida, Dr. Caryn Long of Montverde, Florida, Dr. Rebecca Hamilton of Riviera, Florida, Monica Washington of Texarkana, Texas and Kristen Record of Stratford, Connecticut. The inductees bring with them 145 years of combined experience and Weaver tells KVOE News that during the voting stage of the selection process, the inductees were consistently ranked as the top five applicants.
Weaver says not only have each of the inductees had a profound impact on their students but their fellow teachers as well.
Local induction activities will take place Jun. 12-16 in Emporia and will once again include the rededication of the National Memorial to Fallen Educators. Weaver says this year the memorial will be adding 11 names, three of which are to be added following the deadly Covenant School shooting in Nashville, Tennessee earlier this week that also claimed the lives of three students.
The annual rededication always ends with the saying “no more names.” Weaver says that slogan is more than just words, it is an important call that needs to be heard across the nation.
