A bridge replacement project near Americus has been approved by the Kansas Department of Transportation.
The bridge over Troublesome Creek on Road J, 3.5 miles south and 3 miles east of Americus, had a bid approved Feb. 15. King Construction and Subsidiaries of Hesston won the project with a nearly $800,000 bid, including over $600,000 in state funds and money from Lyon County.
Lyon County Engineer Chip Woods says the bridge is part of the Off-System Bridge Improvement Program, which is designed to repair or replace bridges on what can be considered “minor collector” county roads.
Besides being newer, the replacement bridge will also be slightly longer and wider than the current span and will also have guardrails that are up to current federal code.
Woods says this is the first time Lyon County has applied successfully for an Off-System project. County officials applied for funding in 2021. The project timeline has not been announced.
