A late-night crash southeast of Emporia caused injuries for a Neosho Rapids man.
The crash happened in the 1500 block of Road 150, between Emporia and Neosho Rapids, shortly after 10:45 pm Monday. Lyon County Deputy Brandon Early says 26-year-old Matthew Frakes of Neosho Rapids was westbound on Road 150 and swerved to miss a deer. Frakes’ car went off the road into a field, rolled and came back onto the road where it stopped upside down.
Frakes was transported to Newman Regional Health with unknown but apparently non-life-threatening injuries. He was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.
It’s the second time in less than a week that a driver has been hurt in Lyon County while trying to avoid a deer nearby. Carroll Calmes of Council Grove was hurt Friday when a deer crossed in front of his vehicle in the 2800 block of Road L — and in Calmes’ case, his vehicle went over a creek and hit a bridge. Calmes was released to seek his own medical treatment after being checked by EMS at the scene of that wreck.
