Two Shawnee residents were hurt in a crash in southern Chase County late Monday afternoon.
The crash happened around 5 pm at Kansas Turnpike mile marker 98.6, less than two miles northeast of the Matfield Green service exit and nearly 30 miles southwest of Emporia. The Kansas Highway Patrol says the driver, 80-year-old Thomas Barger, suffered an unspecified medical condition while behind the wheel. Barger’s SUV then went off the highway before stopping.
Barger and his passenger, 72-year-old Rose Barger, were both taken to Newman Regional Health with suspected minor injuries. Both were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
