Over the past week Lyon County, specifically Emporia, has seen a large spike in law enforcement presence as hundreds of officials and experts made their way to town for a special training seminar.
As KVOE News reported earlier this week, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office hosted its annual Spring Training Seminar Tuesday through Thursday. Lyon County Sheriff Jeff Cope says he thought the week was “spectacular” from start to finish due largely to the attendance and the quality of presenters on hand.
Cope says the seminar is the largest of its kind in the state of Kansas with right around 200 law enforcement professionals attending from all around the state of Kansas.
The week’s itinerary was chock-full of quality information including a case study of the BTK serial killer investigation presented by Tim Relph of the Wichita Police Department Wednesday. Lyon County Deputy Eric Williams says the seminar is well-balanced with information that officers want and need to know.
Williams explains one of the more “dry” presentations throughout the week centers on legal updates. That being said, Williams adds that presentation is also one of the most important throughout the seminar.
According to Cope, the Sheriff’s Office will review the feedback received from attendees during the week. He says they will then use that information to help begin planning for the 2024 seminar.
