Local dispatchers are typically the heroes behind the scenes when it comes to major emergencies. However; this week, they are front and center thanks to National Public Safety Telecommunicator Week.
The week of recognition began Sunday and Lyon County Emergency Communications Center Director Roxanne Van Gundy joined KVOE’s Morning Show Monday to discuss the week and the heavy load of work dispatchers face on a daily basis. Van Gundy says this week of recognition comes during one the busiest times of the year for dispatchers, grass fire season.
Van Gundy says the amount of traffic that has come through the center has been “massive”, especially over the past weekend.
With that in mind, Van Gundy says a week like this is incredibly important for herself and her staff. She says it “takes a certain kind of person” to be able to handle the stress of the job and make a career out of it.
Public Safety Telecommunicator Week will continue through Saturday. For more information on the work of local dispatchers please visit LyonCounty911.org or find LyonCounty911 on Facebook.
