USD 253 Emporia Board of Education members will discuss school safety as part of their upcoming meeting Wednesday.
Board members will discuss the results of the district’s safety debrief following a BB gun incident inside Emporia High School that led to lockdowns at Emporia High, Emporia Middle School, USD 253 Transitions, Village Elementary and Flint Hills Technical College. Dirctor of Human Resources Jared Giffin, Emporia High Principal Dathan Fischer and Timmerman Principal Laurie Kurzen will present information.
This comes as the suspect, 14, year-old Arlo Feuillerat, has a detention hearing Tuesday on an aggravated assault charge. As far as Wednesday’s meeting is concerned, the debrief presentation comes immediately after the district gets a presentation from SafeDefend. The presentation on a new security setup was actually organized in Februrary, well before the incident at Emporia High in late March.
There is other business to address. Besides the regular Building for the Future construction update from McCownGordon, board members could well approve a nearly $120,000 resurfacing of the Emporia High track, as well as bids for fixtures and equipment at Emporia Middle School and Village Elementary, a better than $140,000 purchase of Chromebooks for incoming freshmen and a job description for a new position — a childcare provider to oversee a new program for district employees.
The meeting starts at 6:30 pm Wednesday at Mary Herbert Education Center.
