Commercial truck traffic will continue to be restricted on Burlingame Road following discussions amongst Lyon County Commissioners Thursday morning.
Lyon County Engineer Chip Woods presented a resolution to the commission that would lift the restrictions that have been in place since 2015 to accommodate detours in place as a result of ongoing bridge work on Kansas Highway 99. While discussing the matter commissioners and Woods agreed that whether or not the restrictions were lifted there would undoubtedly be a rise in traffic on the roadway.
Woods summed up the matter by saying “people that want to obey it will obey it.”
Lyon County Commission Chairman Rollie Martin says personal responsibility will have to take charge.
With the likely uptick in traffic, Woods says the Highway Department will likely need a larger presence on the roadways to ensure conditions do not deteriorate any further. Work is currently underway on one of two bridges north of Emporia with the full scope of work expected to be complete by late November weather permitting.
In separate but related business Thursday, commissioners approved a resolution to post a 15-ton weight limit on Road 170 while the bridge work continues.
Commissioners also approved a resolution related to unpaid personal property tax judgments, held one executive session and took a tour of the Lyon County Emergency Communications Center.
The Lyon County Commission will reconvene for its weekly meeting next Thursday at 9 am inside of the Lyon County Courthouse.
