With cleanup well underway following tornadoes across the north half of Chase County, Cottonwood Falls has issued a declaration of local disaster related to the damage.
A declaration published on the city’s Facebook page Friday says all available city resources and personnel are — or will be — committed to disaster work and the severity of the damage will force the city to request “supplemental assistance.” The damage also triggers the need for using emergency powers as granted under state law.
The declaration is effective for no longer than seven days, expiring April 28. A damage cost estimate has not been announced.
Cottonwood Falls was hit by one of eight tornadoes generated by a single supercell thunderstorm Wednesday night. The Cottonwood Falls tornado had a 50-yard path width as it traveled about a mile across the north side of the city. Nobody was hurt.
