Trial is a distinct possibility by mid-summer in a Lyon County attempted murder case.
On Friday, Judge Lee Fowler denied a motion from Logan Casteel’s defense attorney, Rick Meier, to have immunity granted for Casteel in the case. Meier says the alleged victim in the case, Justin Smith, hit Casteel while having a knife in his possession and Casteel shot Smith in self-defense. Meier also says Smith had attacked Casteel as part of an unspecified incident earlier.
Casteel is charged with attempted murder after shooting Smith in mid-October. Trial is now set to begin July 17 after a status hearing July 12.
