April is the key month for planned burns across the Flint Hills, and the 2023 rendition is no exception.
The Kansas Flint Hills Smoke Management Facebook page shows over 1 million total acres have been burned across Lyon and surrounding counties in the April 8 and April 15 reports, including over 600,000 acres areawide in the April 15 graphic. The most recent graphic, posted Friday, has Chase County with over 215,000 acres burned, Wabaunsee County with over 140,000 acres burned and Lyon County with nearly 92,000 acres burned.
The week ahead does not look promising for landowners needing to conduct controlled burns, with numerous chances of rain from Monday afternoon through Saturday.
