Emporia residents are invited to don their best “derby attire” and head on down to the Bowyer Community Building Saturday.
Big Brothers Big Sisters Serving Lyon County is hosting its inaugural Big Race Derby Party from 4 pm to 7:30 pm Saturday in honor of the Kentucky Derby. BBBS Serving Lyon County Director Jacque Wellnitz, a recent guest of KVOE’s Morning Show Wednesday, says it is a unique way to enjoy the derby, especially for those who have never watched before, while also learning more about the mission of BBBS.
Saturday’s event is just the latest of several unique fundraising ventures that have been put on by Big Brothers Big Sisters in recent years. Wellnitz says it’s always great to branch out from traditional fundraising ideas and try something new.
The evening will include drinks, food and a live and silent auction all for the price of $50 per ticket with all proceeds going to support BBBS programs in the local community. In addition to the money raised through the evening’s festivities, Mark and Angie Schreiber will be donating five percent of winnings from their horse Forsted Departure who will be racing at Churchill Downs Saturday afternoon.
