Over 200 special athletes ventured to Welch Stadium for the third annual Special Athletes Track and Field Day Friday.
This year’s event featured the most participants in the short time in its existence.
Event Organizer and Emporia State Assistant Professor of Health, Physical Education and Recreation Dr. Hannah Kipfer says it’s not just athletes from Emporia coming to the event.
Athletes participated in a variety of events ranging from walking and running to throwing and even making up a relay, which wrapped up the event.
Kipfer created the event based on circumstances that are close to her heart. She decided Emporia State needed to host an event like this.
The event could not be possible without its volunteers which included student athletes from Emporia State.
Kipfer says anyone is welcome to participate in the event even if they didn’t pre-register for a day of fun. She hopes it continues to grow in the future after this year’s turnout.
