Melvern Lake spent much of last summer in an algae watch or algae warning, and it’s already in a warning.
The US Army Corps of Engineers says there has been a high cell count at the lake as part of regular test results, prompting the Kansas Department of Health and Environment to issue the warning. This means conditions are unsafe for both people and animals, so inhaling spray or lake-based aerosols may be harmful. Fish can be eaten, but only if they are rinsed with clean water and only the fillet part is consumed. Skin in contact with the lake water should be washed with clean water as soon as possible.
Melvern Lake was in an algae watch in mid-July, but the Outlet River Pond area was upgraded to a warning in last August.
