There are a lot of community events on the calendar this weekend, and Mother Nature has decided to turn up the heat for both weekend days.
After highs in the upper 70s Friday and upper 60s Thursday, high temperatures will be in the low 90s both Saturday and Sunday. It’s the first heat burst of the year, and Newman Regional Health Physician Assistant Heather Brazzle is asking you to prepare before you enjoy all the activities by drinking a lot of water before going out in the heat, limiting any strenuous activity to the morning or evening hours, wearing light, loose-fitting clothes, using sunscreen and checking neighbors to see how they are doing. She also says you need to listen to the signals your body is giving you — especially if you don’t feel right.
Heat exhaustion as described can lead fairly easily to heat stroke, which can be fatal if not treated. Symptoms include confusion, slurred speech, loss of consciousness, either dry skin or profuse sweating, seizures and very high body temperature.
Warm temperatures continue into the work week with highs in the upper 80s to around 90 Monday and Tuesday.
Meanwhile, there are at least two chances of severe weather to start the week, although both are low-end. All area counties are in a marginal risk area for Sunday night with all hazards possible but unlikely. The marginal risk area returns areawide Monday for hail and wind.
