By the National Weather Service records, Saturday’s high temperature was the hottest it has been in Emporia for a May 6.
Granted, records at the Emporia Municipal Airport only date back to 1950, but the Weather Service recorded a 95-degree temperature Saturday afternoon, well above the prior record of 90 degrees set in 1952.
Another tentative record could well fall Sunday. The current record, also 90 degrees, was set in 1962. The forecast as of Saturday late afternoon is 94.
Sunday night introduces a marginal to slight risk of severe weather for area counties, with areas essentially north of US Highway 56 in the slight risk area. The main concerns now are damaging winds and large hail after midnight. A marginal risk area is in place for Monday afternoon and evening, again for hail and winds.
