It’s never the homestretch for Big Brothers Big Sisters Serving Lyon County — but supporters got some thrills watching the homestretch of the Kentucky Derby as part of the first-ever Big Race on Saturday.
Agency Director Jacque Wellnitz was pleased with how things went this year and she’s already planning ahead for next year’s event.
Wellnitz says Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies, including the Lyon County region, have generated more mentor-student matches so far this year than the state of Colorado and cities like Kansas City, Missouri, and Atlanta. She says the program benefits children, mentors and the community as a whole.
About 80 people attended the event, which included a watch party and auction. Totals will be announced this week, including the proceeds from Emporian Mark Schreiber’s horse, Frosted Departure, taking fourth in an undercard race.
