If you are planning on filing for election, re-election or wishing to withdraw from an election you have a little more than three weeks left to do so.
Lyon County Clerk Tammy Vopat recently joined KVOE’s Morning Show to discuss the upcoming candidate filing and withdrawal deadline. Vopat reminds hopeful candidates they have until noon on Jun. 1 to file their paperwork with the Lyon County Election Office.
With city council, mayor and school board seats all up for election this year, Vopat says this is one of the most important elections for local voters.
Several candidates have filed for local school board positions including incumbents Gene Windle, Emily Darbyshire and Charles Steffes, along with newcomer Justin Farr for USD 252 Southern Lyon County. USD 253 Emporia incumbent Jeremy Dorsey has also filed for re-election, however, his fellow incumbents Art Guttierez, Grant Riles and Leslie Seeley have yet to file for re-election.
For local government, Emporia City Commission incumbent Becky Smith filed her paperwork with the clerk’s office back in late April, however, fellow incumbents Jamie Sauder and Erren Harter have not. Neosho Rapids City Council member Brian Shank and Americus City Council incumbent Nicolette Nuessen are both on the ballot for their respective positions.
If enough candidates file for election a primary will be held Aug. 1
