Lyon County will be applying for state assistance with a planned bridge replacement.
During the Lyon County Commission’s weekly action meeting Thursday, commissioners gave direction for Lyon County Engineer Chip Woods to submit an application to the Kansas Local Bridge Improvement Program. Plans are to utilize the program to construct a new bridge near the historic Bird Bridge, also known as Rocky Ford Bridge.
According to Woods, the new structure is needed due to the age, condition and alignment of Bird Bridge.
The cost of the project is estimated at $3.4 million and if approved, the county’s share of the cost would be $750,000. Word on when the application will be submitted and its status is pending.
This is the second consecutive year the county has applied to the program for this specific project. Woods adds the Lyon will be competing with several other counties in applying for the funding.
Separately, commissioners approved the posting of weight limits at various county bridges and the purchase of a new pickup for the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office at a cost of nearly $51,000. Human Resources Director Janice Huffman and Controller Dan Williams also discussed increased fees for drug testing and related services.
The Lyon County Commission will reconvene for its weekly action meeting next Thursday at 9 am inside of the Lyon County Courthouse Commission Chambers.
