The home of Emporia’s new skateboard park has been secured, however, groundwork likely won’t begin until either later this year or early 2024.
That’s according to Emporia City Manager Trey Cocking during the first KVOE “Q&A With Trey” segment Monday morning on KVOE’s Talk of Emporia. Cocking says programming is underway for a master plan of the new skateboarding facility set to be constructed in Whittier Park.
Cocking says the main focus of this project is to construct a facility that accommodates a variety of “action sports” aside from just skateboarding.
An exact date is not available, however, Cocking says it is his hope that groundwork on the park could begin by the fourth quarter of this year if not the first quarter of next year.
As work continues to begin construction on the new skate park, Cocking says the city has applied for a “planning grant” through the federal government and in cooperation with Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad to assist with potential improvements at city railroad crossings.
Over the past year, there have been three notable tragedies at local crossings which Cocking says has been a major catalyst for the project. Further details on the project, including a potential timeline, are pending.
Other topics covered Monday included the city’s recently updated wage scales and the recent hiring of Mark Detter as Emporia’s Assistant City Manager and Taylor Wash as the city’s Special Projects Director. Q&A With Trey will be a recurring segment on KVOE’s Talk of Emporia on the third Monday of each month.
