Less than a month after Evergy formally asked for permission to increase base rates for the first time in five years, the Kansas Corporation Commission has announced three public hearings so customers can learn more about the request and announce any concerns they may have.
None of the public meetings are in Emporia. In fact, meetings will be July 11 in Topeka, July 13 in Overland Park and July 27 in Wichita, but area residents can watch the hearings on the Kansas Corporation Commission’s YouTube channel and they can also register in advance on the KCC website to participate via Zoom.
Customers served by Evergy Kansas Central, including all area counties, could see a nearly 10-percent overall rate increase — translating to a monthly bill increase of over $14. Meanwhile, Evergy Kansas Metro, or the Kansas City metro area, would see an increase of nearly $3.50 a month. Evergy has said it wants to “recover investments…to improve service to customers with a more reliable and resilient power grid and updated customer service systems.”
If approved by the KCC, Evergy’s new rate structure could go into effect by December.
