There will be a slight change to Emporia’s Memorial Day Service when it takes place Monday.
Unlike years past where the service has had one featured speaker, there will be readings. This is something that has been done in the past with the Veteran’s Day service
On KVOE’s Morning Show Tuesday, Event spokesman and local veteran Ron Whitney explains about the change.
Lesley Hedges, Jerry Laurendine, and Ed Rathke will present on several different topics surrounding Memorial Day. Whitney also explained the difference between the Memorial Day service and the Veteran’s Day service.
Activities begin just before 9:30 a.m. with preliminary music being played by the Emporia Municipal Band. The program begins with the Raising of the Colors, the National Anthem, and Opening Prayer and Pledge of Allegiance.
After the readings, there will be the placing of the wreaths and special music as well as a moment of remebemberance for veterans who have passed over the last 12 months and the playing of Taps. Post 5 Legion Commander Clay Childs will serve as emcee.
KVOE will carry the Memorial Day Services on 14 KVOE-AM, 96.9 FM, and streaming with audio and video on KVOE TV at KVOE.com.
