An electric transmission line project connecting the Wolf Creek nuclear generating station to a substation in western Missouri has approval from the Kansas Corporation Commission.
On Wednesday, the KCC approved a nearly 100-mile transmission line from Wolf Creek to the Blackberry Substation in Jasper County, Missouri, about eight miles southeast of Pittsburg. About 83 miles of that new transmission line will pass through five Kansas counties, including Coffey County.
NextEra Transmission Southwest, also known as NEET Southwest, will build and operate the line, which was deemed by the Southwest Power Pool as a “necessary economic project” to build transmission capacity and “relieve congestion from western Kansas east to load centers within the SPP region.”
NEET Southwest also has “micro-siting authority,” meaning the company can make minor adjustments to the route and place infrastructure to avoid environmental concerns or meet landowner requests. Major adjustments or changes that haven’t meant prior notice to landowners must get KCC approval.
