While annoying, Lyon County Extension Horticulturist Travis Carmichael says a recent invasion of moths noted across the local community are no cause for alarm at this time.
Carmichael tells KVOE News that there has been a larger notable presence of the insect reported within local homes. He says of the varying species that have been noticed the most common is the army cutworm moth. While their name may seem menacing, Carmichael says they are not a major threat to homes or anything inside of them at this time.
Carmichael says the late summer and early fall months is when the presence of moths can be a problem. He explains that this is the time when army cutworms, moth larvae that are typically found in grass and yards, begin to pop up and feed in preparation of the next migration pattern.
Carmichael says their feeding habits can often lead to significant damage of yards. As such, he says the best line of defense is a high level of vigilance on the state of your grass.
Carmichael says there are a few tricks that can assist you in spotting a potential infestation of cutworms.
