One person is dead following a bicycle accident southeast of Emporia Friday morning.
According to Lyon County Deputy Chuck Moore, Lyon County EMS, District 5 First Responders and Lyon County Deputies were all called to the 100 block of Road U just before 11:30 am for a bicycle accident involving one person. Once on scene, crews found 82-year-old McPherson resident Michael Welch unresponsive in a ditch.
Moore tells KVOE News Welch was traveling downhill when he entered the ditch for currently unlisted reasons. Welch was pronounced dead roughly an hour later.
According to Moore, other riders traveling with Welch reported they were training for the upcoming Unbound series of races at the time of the accident. No vehicles were involved.
