The Emporia Municipal Band begins its regular summer concert season this week.
It’s the first season as conductor for Nancy Riecker, who ascended from band member to director last summer following the retirement of James Davis — becoming the first woman to lead the band in its history. Riecker says it means a lot to her to take the baton.
The concert season officially begins Thursday after the band plays at the city’s Memorial Day service Monday morning. Riecker is looking at an “adventurous” lineup of music for Thursday night.
For the Memorial Day service, the band begins playing at 9 am Monday before the service officially begins at 9:30 am. We will air the service on 14 KVOE, 96.9 FM and KVOE-TV at KVOE.com shortly before the service begins.
Concerts are at 8 pm at Fremont Park. They are free to attend and last about an hour. Concerts take place Thursdays through July 13.
