Unbound Gravel won’t be the only event in town with a special launch this week.
The annual Kansas Law Enforcement Torch Run supporting Special Olympics Kansas will leave from Emporia State University at 9 am Thursday morning. Joining law enforcement on the ride will be local Special Olympic athletes who will march down Commerical Street alongside riders.
Lyon County Undersheriff John Koelsch says there is always a great turnout of local residents who come out to cheer on the riders and athletes alike and he hopes that tradition will continue.
Koelsch adds that the torch ride is more than just a local tradition, it is a very personal experience for many including himself.
Law enforcement will be transporting the ceremonial torch for the 2023 Special Olympics Games in Wichita from Friday, June 2 through Sunday, June 4.
In addition to local law enforcement, KVOE General Manager Ron Thomas will be riding once again for Ron’s Ride which will see Thomas travel with the contingent of law enforcement to Olpe raising money at the same time. For those who would still like to contribute to Ron’s Ride, you can do so by visiting the Ron’s Ride page on KVOE.com.
