There was some smoke, but no fire after an incident at Good’s Cash Saver on Thursday.
Emporia, Americus and Olpe were dispatched to the grocery store at 2703 West Highway 50 late Thursday morning. Emporia Fire Capt. Wade Schmidt says a hot water heater had an electric malfunction, which led to the smoke. With Americus and Olpe crews canceled before arriving, Emporia Fire turned the breaker switch off.
The building was evacuated briefly as a precaution.
Separately, Emporia Fire was called to investigate for any signs of fire after a home at 825 Constitution was hit by lightning, likely between 12-12:30 pm after an intense thunderstorm. The investigation was requested by the landlord roughly two after the strike as a precautionary measure. Schmidt says there was no sign of fire at the house.
