How many activities can you cram into a two-hour event?
The Burnley Memorial Library in Cottonwood Falls has a lot coming for its Roping, Riding and Reading at the Library event Friday. Spokesperson and librarian Janet Ayers says the event lineup begins with Miss Rodeo Kansas Jessica Klumpe, Flint Hills Rodeo Queens and Princesses.
Rodeo Queens will read non-fiction rodeo selections before a lot of stick horse activities, including races, pole bending and barrel races. Roping practice will be available. Several animals will also be on site, including Ruby the miniature mare; BoonDoc, a Rodeo Queen’s horse; Cori the goat; and two lambs — Thing 1 and Thing 2. Free horse magazines will be available, and — on top of all those activities — there will be a reunion for the 60th anniversary of the first Miss Rodeo Kansas pageant.
Activities begin at 10 am. For more information, call Ayers at 620-273-6467.
This is one of the activities connected to the Flint Hills Rodeo, which officially begins Thursday evening with the trade show and the buckaroo and buckarette rodeo, both at 6 pm, before the first rodeo performance — featuring world champion Jess Pope — at 8 pm. Friday has the same general schedule, with the addition of the cowboy dance at 10 pm. Saturday has the annual rodeo parade at 2 pm, trade show and children’s rodeo at 6, final rodeo performance at 8 and the dance at 10 pm.
