The Special Olympics torch is now well on its way to Wichita for the annual State Games.
The torch left Emporia shortly after 9 am, with law enforcement and Special Olympians parading down Commercial Street to Hetlinger Developmental Services for a brief stop. Executive Director Jill Burton says the event highlights the longstanding community support for those with developmental disabilities.
After the stop at Hetlinger, KVOE General Manager Ron Thomas continued to Olpe to complete the annual Ron’s Ride fundraiser. He says it was a smooth ride.
Ron’s Ride generated over $5,300 for Special Olympics this year.
6:30 am Thursday: Special Olympics torch to depart from Emporia shortly after 9 am Thursday
For a few hours, the Special Olympics torch has been residing in Emporia. The torch leaves town for El Dorado and, ultimately, Wichita, very soon.
Local law enforcement went to Coffey County to bring the torch to Emporia on Wednesday, arriving in town shortly before 5 pm. Torchbearer Michelle Pendlay enjoyed the experience.
There were concerns about rain and storms hampering the ride, but Lyon County Undersheriff John Koelsch says those concerns never materialized on the route.
The torch leaves shortly after 9 am from the south end of Emporia State’s Kellogg Circle, with Special Olympians and KVOE General Manager Ron Thomas going south on Commercial to Hetlinger Developmental Services for a brief stop before Thomas goes to Olpe for the annual Ron’s Ride fundraiser. As of last word, over $4,800 has been donated to help Special Olympics through the annual bike ride. Residents can still donate by clicking here.
Residents are also encouraged to line Commercial Street to cheer on the Special Olympians beginning around 9 am.
