Work has been underway for several months now at the Sixth and Prairie intersection, and access to the south leg of that intersection will be closed to thru traffic for a time Tuesday morning.
Prairie Street will be closed from the south part of the intersection for about 165 feet so Evergy can set a new transformer and set its primary overhead service across Prairie as work continues nearby on the new Xpress Wellness urgent care facility.
Meanwhile, City Engineer Jim Ubert says certain things are going well as the geometric improvements continue.
Ubert also says lead time for installing new traffic signal poles is “lengthy.”
Installation of most poles will follow shortly after they arrive. One is already installed for the northeast corner, but there have been some issues for the northwest corner because there is a lot of “utility congestion” under that corner. Pole bases have to be sunk around 13 feet below the surface, and several utilities are sunk around 9-10 feet underground.
Work on Sixth and Prairie may continue through late summer.
