The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office has the bulk of its recently ordered Drones now on hand and currently in use.
According to Lyon County Sheriff Jeff Cope, six of the seven units ordered last month have arrived and at just the right time following heavy rainfall earlier in the week. With several Lyon County roadways flooded as a result, deputies were able to use one of the drones to fly over the roadways to inspect conditions.
Prior to this week’s rainfall, Cope says the drones had another test flight as they were used to film some of the action of the Unbound race launches in downtown Emporia last weekend. Cope says in addition to being tools to help increase safety and efficiency for the office, it is nice when they are able to utilize them to help celebrate and promote the local community.
The Sheriff’s Office is still awaiting delivery of its medium size Matrix 30-T drone. Cope says it should arrive within the next week.
Additionally, Cope says there is currently one deputy trained and certified the drones with many more pilots currently in training. Purchase of the drones was approved by Lyon County Commissioners during their May 4th action meeting.
