Plans have been announced for Emporia’s Juneteenth Celebration this week.
Friday will have an informational panel about the holiday, as well as Memorial Day and the Eastside Community Group, which is sponsoring the activities. Discussion will take place from 7-9 pm.
Saturday involves a community potluck barbecue from 11 am to 5 pm, with food to be served at 1 pm. The Eastside Community Group will provide meat, dringks, plasticware and condiments. Attendees are asked to bring a covered dish to feed at least 10 people.
All activities are slated for Eastside Memorial Park, Ninth and East.
Juneteenth is America’s oldest celebration of the ending of slavery. It became a federal holiday two years ago.
