A Lyon County drug distribution and weapon case rooted in an alleged incident nearly two years ago may be going to trial soon.
The criminal case against Alejandro Lara-Ceja has a status hearing at 4 pm Wednesday. Judge Jeffry Larson will preside.
Lara-Ceja was initially charged in April 2020 with distributing drugs within 1,000 feet of a school, as well as criminal possession of a weapon by a felon, criminal discharge of a firearm, possession of a firearm while under the influence, DUI and possession of both drugs and paraphernalia. The case had several delays, including three where Lara-Ceja allegedly failed to appear for hearings and one when prosecutors requested assistance from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
Trial may begin Tuesday. It might also begin July 10 or July 24.
Separately, a man considered as a fugitive from Oklahoma has a review hearing Wednesday.
Joseph Whittington was arrested locally in May. He’s accused of possessing a “controlled dangerous substance” in Lincoln County, Oklahoma.
Whittington, who has two drug possession convictions on his Oklahoma record, will appear before Judge Doug Jones at 1:30 pm.
