(nfl) The Kansas City Chiefs began their three-day mandatory minicamp on Tuesday with nearly full attendance from their 90-man offseason roster.
Defensive tackle Chris Jones was one of 6 players that missed the day. Jones is entering the final year of a four-year contract extension worth $80M with $60M guaranteed that he signed back in 2020.
It’s unclear if this is a holdout or an excused absence and we won’t hear from Andy Reid until the conclusion of the mandatory minicamp on Thursday.
5 other players missed Tuesday’s practice. That group includes Blake Bell, Jerick McKinnon, Trey Smith, Tershawn Wharton, and Isiah Pacheco. They could be excused or they could be dealing with injuries.
Three players were on the sidelines without their helmets — S Mike Edwards, CB Trent McDuffie, and CB L’Jarius Sneed. They each seem to be dealing with some sort of injury at this time and the team is being cautious with how quickly they bring them back.
Running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire also met with the media. He struggled through a season of inefficiency and injuries during his third year.
His performance led the Chiefs to decline his fifth-year option over the offseason, but Edwards-Helaire doesn’t look back on his down 2022 as a reason to stay down.
Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow was asked to name the best quarterback in the world at this current date and time.
“I don’t think there’s any argument right now, it’s Pat (Mahomes),” Burrow said. “Until somebody has a better year than he’s had. He’s the one to knock off.”
