The Emporia Spartan 16s went 0-2 on day two of the Emporia State Tournament Saturday at the Trusler Sports Complex.
The 16s fell to Lawrence, 4-1, in their game and followed that with a 9-7 loss to the Topeka Scrappers.
Against the Scrappers, Emporia held a 2-1 lead through two innings before the Scrappers put up three in the third inning to take a 3-2 advantage. Emporia tied the game at 3 after three innings.
The Scrappers took the lead in the fourth with two runs. Emporia cut the deficit to 5-4 through five innings. The Scrappers then tacked on three in the sixth. Emporia scored three runs in the seventh but couldn’t continue the rally.
Against Lawrence, the Chesty Lions scored one in the fourth, two in the fifth, and one in the sixth.
The 16s scored its lone run in the seventh on an RBI double by Owen Ruge.
Emporia finished the tournament going 0-4.
Coach Brady McAfee says the biggest takeaway from the weekend was the 16s competed.
The 16s are now 3-8 on the season. They’ll face Andover in a doubleheader Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Soden’s Grove.
