The Emporia Senior Center has weathered several storms in recent years and it appears as though it may have found solid footing for the time being.
During a recent interview on KVOE’s Talk of Emporia, Senior Center Director Ian Boyd stated the center has a “little over $70,000 in the bank.” This is a significant positive turn for the center which was facing the possibility of dissolving just a year ago.
Back in October, the center held an emergency meeting regarding its future, which included a possible sale or leasing of senior center property. Boyd tells KVOE he believes the meeting was a “wake-up call” for the community.
Friday’s interview came as the senior center continues work on its newly updated website which should go online in the next week or so according to Boyd. He says the update is part of his overall mission to pull the senior center “out of the Jurassic era.”
While the center is looking stronger financially, Boyd tells KVOE the center still needs help and he is hoping to secure additional funding through both the city and county to that end. In fact, Boyd recently attended the Lyon County Commission’s weekly session and submitted a request of $115,000 for the 2024 fiscal year. The request was a $10,000 increase over the previous year.
