6:15 am Tuesday: Marginal severe weather risk Tuesday night before heat dome builds north across area
Along with a decent chance of showers and thunderstorms Tuesday night is a marginal-to-slight risk of severe weather for part of the KVOE listening area.
The Storm Prediction Center has highlighted an area south of a line from Council Grove to near Reading to Melvern for the possibility of stronger storm activity. Areas between that line and a second line from Bazaar to near Virgil to near Gridley are in the marginal risk, while areas south of the Bazaar-Gridley line are in the slight risk.
Wind speeds at or above 60 mph are the main concern by late evening.
Meanwhile, things are still on track for a three-day heat burst areawide beginning Wednesday. TV-13 meteorologist Doug Meyers says this is part of an expanding “heat dome” to our south.
High temperatures could be as high as 103 for Emporia with heat index readings around 106. Thursday could see a high of 105 and Friday could reach 101. There are shower and storm chances early Friday, as in through the mid-morning hours, and again by mid-evening.
You’re encouraged to pre-hydrate before the heat settles in Wednesday. Once the heat is here, drink lots of water, stay in air conditioning or the shade as much as possible, move any strenuous activities to the morning or evening if that’s allowed and wear light, loose-fitting clothing. Also, keep a close eye on young and old alike. Children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles when it’s this hot.
