Stifling heat and humidity covered the KVOE listening area for the second straight day.
Air temperatures Thursday hit 100. The peak heat index at the Emporia Municipal Airport was as high as 110.
This follows Wednesday’s official high of 99 and top heat index of 107.
The current forecast for Friday offers no relief until the mid-evening hours. The projected high is 102 with heat index readings as high as 107, triggering a heat advisory for Lyon, Coffey, Osage and Wabaunsee counties from 1-7 pm.
The relief comes in a decent chance of showers and thunderstorms from mid-evening Friday into the early overnight hours Saturday, with more storms possible by mid-afternoon Saturday and again in the Saturday evening to early Sunday hours. High temperatures will be in the low 90s, but the afternoon and evening storms currently have a marginal severe weather risk for damaging wind.
