Friday’s relief won’t come until the evening hours after temperatures go back above 100 degrees by late afternoon with heat index readings as high as 107. With the oppressive heat still in place for now, Emporia Solid Waste Supervisor Keith Senn says he has been pumping a simple message to his employees all week: be safe.
A heat advisory is in effect for Lyon, Coffey, Osage and Wabaunsee counties from 1-7 pm.
There is a good chance of showers and storms for Friday night and again Saturday afternoon through evening, with a marginal severe weather risk for areas along and north of Interstate 35 and US Highway 50 for Friday night and areawide beginning Saturday afternoon. Hail and wind are the main concerns for both time periods.
